Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration and Australia’s Department of Home Affairs has launched the landmark Australia-Indonesia Peer Learning Program, which commences in June 2025.
The launch was attended by Australian Deputy Ambassador Gita Kamath, Director for International Cooperation from the Indonesian Directorate-General for Immigration Arief Munandar, Advisor to the Minister for Immigration and Corrections Anggiat Napitupulu, and other key Indonesian and Australian stakeholders.
During the launch, Deputy Ambassador Gita Kamath underscored the importance of this partnership in addressing shared immigration and border security challenges. Visiting Department of Home Affairs First Assistant Secretary Joe Feld highlighted the program’s potential to deepen links that pave the way for long-term collaboration.
“This Peer Learning Program is the next step in building on the long-standing immigration partnership between our two countries,” said Deputy Ambassador Kamath. “This initiative will strengthen our ability to address shared challenges in border management and irregular migration.”
The Peer Learning Program will bring together experts from Australia and Indonesia to share knowledge, expertise and experiences in border management, fostering a deeper understanding of each other’s systems and processes. Over a 12 month period, participants will engage in collaborative learning, sharing of best practices, and joint problem-solving through a series of bilateral site visits and virtual engagement.
