Indonesia and Australia Collaborate to Build Quality Basic Education System in IKN

13 June 2025

Otorita Ibu Kota Nusantara (OIKN) is collaborating with the Indonesian Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) and the Australia-Indonesia Innovation for Indonesia's School Children (INOVASI) Program to build a quality, inclusive and future-relevant basic education system.

Several early childhood education centres and primary schools in IKN have already implemented participatory and data-driven learning practices. These changes not only improve student learning outcomes but also strengthen the role of teachers and principals.

The Head of OIKN, Basuki Hadimuljono, emphasised that basic education is the main foundation for building smart and sustainable cities. "OIKN is dedicated not only to constructing physical infrastructure but also to developing human resources in the IKN. One key focus is on enhancing the quality of education as a long-term investment for future generations. To accelerate this initiative, OIKN is partnering with various organisations to ensure that educational transformation occurs collaboratively, sustainably, and with a broad impact," said Basuki.

Since 2024, OIKN, Kemendikdasmen and INOVASI’s collaboration has focused on improving the quality of 122 primary schools, through teacher training, provision of books, and dissemination of good practices in literacy, numeracy, and character strengthening.

The Indonesian Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, stated that OIKN, Kemendikdasmen and INOVASI's collaboration was in line with the vision of ‘Quality Education for All’. He emphasised the importance of cross-sector partnerships in building an equitable and sustainable education system. “Partnerships are the main foundation in creating a quality, inclusive and equitable education transformation that serves every Indonesian child,” said Minister Mu’ti.

“When they met in Jakarta in May, Prime Minister Albanese and President Prabowo reiterated their shared commitment to lift literacy and numeracy outcomes for children. It’s wonderful to see this commitment realised at IKN,” said Australian Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia, Gita Kamath.

OIKN, Kemendikdasmen, and INOVASI held an education showcase at the OIKN office today to highlight partnerships in this sector. The event featured an exhibition of learning outcomes and a public discussion involving school principals, teachers, parents, and education experts.
