Australia and Indonesia Strengthening Higher Education and Research Partnership

The Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (MOHEST) and the Australian Embassy in Jakarta held discussions on policy developments based on shared priorities and opportunities to enhance long-term bilateral synergy at the first Indonesia–Australia High-Level Policy Dialogue on Higher Education, Science, and Research, hosted at MOHEST on 23 July 2025.

Led by the Indonesian Vice Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Fauzan, together with the Australian Chargé d’Affaires to Indonesia, Gita Kamath, this policy dialogue represents an important step toward building a more dynamic and mutually beneficial partnership.

“This initiative is not only about policies and formal agreements, but also about opening opportunities that can transform people’s lives. We must ensure the sustainability of our cooperation programs in the long term,” Vice Minister Fauzan emphasized.

The Indonesia-Australia High-Level Policy Dialogue also marked notable momentum in strengthening bilateral relations between Indonesia and Australia as well as initiating the expansion of cooperation in the fields of higher education, science, and technology.

“The dialogue lays the groundwork for deeper policy alignment, stronger partnerships and greater innovation in education. Education is the bedrock of our bilateral relationship, and I look forward to the continued collaboration between our nations,” said Chargé Kamath. 

Director General of Research and Development, MOHEST, Fauzan Adziman emphasized that this policy dialogue is a critical step toward advancing a more dynamic and mutually beneficial partnership.

“By aligning the priorities and interests of both countries, we can address shared challenges, strengthen existing connections, and explore new areas of collaboration. Indonesia is committed to enhancing the role of universities in promoting research downstreaming and impactful innovation. We look forward to continued collaboration with Australia to strengthen academic excellence and scientific innovation,” said Fauzan.

Both countries agreed to continue this dialogue on an ongoing basis and explore further opportunities for collaboration. The dialogue reflects the commitment of both countries to place higher education and research as the main pillars of an advanced bilateral relationship in the future.
