Today, over 100 representatives from the Indonesian and Australian government and business communities gathered to mark the fifth anniversary of the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) in Jakarta.

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Rod Brazier highlighted the achievements of IA-CEPA in strengthening the ties between Australia and Indonesia. “In just five years, IA-CEPA has more than doubled trade between Indonesia and Australia. It is a pivotal agreement that reflects the deep relationship and trust between our countries,” he said.

IA-CEPA has given Indonesia access to high quality raw materials from Australia to value-add and export to third markets. It supports jobs and growth and creates shared prosperity and economic resilience for Indonesia and Australia.

Indonesian Minister of Trade Budi Santoso expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming review of the agreement, emphasising that it remains relevant and adaptive, while continuing to deliver added value for both countries amid evolving global dynamics.

Indonesian Ambassador to Australia Siswo Pramono emphasised the importance of IA-CEPA’s five-year anniversary celebration as momentum to review IA-CEPA, especially to anticipate increasing geopolitical tension that will affect the region, “We need to be introspective about how to optimise this strategic tool. We need to level up our trust in each other to overcome the challenge together.”

During the event, Australia’s Business Champion for Indonesia Professor Jennifer Westacott and Professor Mari Elka Pangestu offered their views how IA-CEPA can deepen the Australia-Indonesia relationship, and how our shared commitment to open and rules-based trade supports both economies in the face of global economic uncertainty.
