Australia Welcomes More Students from Indonesia

Media Release

8 August 2025

The Australian Government is increasing the number of international student places in Australia next year, as well as introducing new measures to boost the number of students from Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries.

New international student numbers will increase by 9 per cent to 295,000 for 2026, from 270,000 in 2025.  Around two-thirds of places will be allocated to universities and one-third to the vocational and training sector.

Australia’s public universities will be able to apply to increase their international student allocations for 2026, by demonstrating an increased engagement with Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries through education offerings, partnerships, branch campuses, alumni engagement and scholarships.

Australian Ambassador Rod Brazier welcomed the announcement. “Indonesia and Australia share a longstanding partnership on education, and we look forward to welcoming more Indonesians to study in Australia. Indonesian students enrich our campuses and help strengthen connections between our countries,” said Ambassador Brazier.

As part of the reforms, universities will also be required to provide additional student accommodation to ensure both domestic and international students have access to safe and secure student housing

Australia is one of the most popular destinations for Indonesian students, with a record 24,000 Indonesian students studying in the country in 2025. Australia’s new policy will further strengthen education cooperation and engagement with Indonesia.
