Seven Australian emerging leaders are currently visiting Indonesia, from 15 to 26 September, as part of the 2025 Australia-Indonesia Muslim Exchange Program (AIMEP). The delegation will travel to Jakarta and Makassar to foster meaningful connections, strengthen friendships, and promote deeper intercultural and interfaith understanding.

“Connections between people are at the heart of Australia-Indonesia relations,” said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Rod Brazier. “This program brings together Australian and Indonesian emerging leaders to engage in interfaith dialogue, promote mutual understanding and build lasting relationships.”

This year’s Australian delegation comprised of board members of Muslim communities, the Islamic Museum of Australia and the Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights, alongside law, finance, public service, health, podcasting, and community development professionals. They will join with 12 Indonesian delegates, and participate in a five-week online learning course followed by a ten-day immersive visit to each country.

During their time in Jakarta, the delegation is meeting with prominent religious organisations, government ministers, reconnecting with Indonesian alumni, visiting an Islamic boarding school, and engaging with prominent civil society organisations.

Next week, the delegation will travel to Makassar, where they will spend five days engaging with educators and students, local NGOs, and exploring the historical ties between Makassar and the Yolngu people of northern Australia.

AIMEP was established in 2002 by the Australian Government through the Australia-Indonesia Institute.
