Australian Chief of Defence Force Visits Indonesia to Advance Cooperation

Australian Chief of the Defence Force, Admiral David Johnston and his counterpart, Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, General TNI Agus Subiyanto met on 16 October 2025. Admiral Johnston was visiting Indonesia for the 13th Australia-Indonesia High Level Defence Dialogue.

The two Chiefs of Defence discussed avenues to expand information sharing, the extensive program of exercises, training, and other matters related to regional and global security.

“Our discussions reflected a shared commitment to deepening defence cooperation in support of a peaceful, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific,” said Admiral Johnston.

“General Subiyanto and I agreed to continue strengthening interoperability and increasing the complexity of our practical engagement under the Defence Cooperation Agreement.”

General Subiyanto said, ‘’Indonesia and Australia share a common interest in regional security, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. Through the 13th AUSINDO Defence dialogue, we are strengthening our commitment to maintaining regional security and stability."

During a courtesy call with Indonesian Minister for Defence, H.E. Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Admiral Johnston discussed the implementation of outcomes from the recent Defence Ministers’ Meeting, including cooperation on deepening people to people links, Special Forces engagement, and joint exercises at Morotai, North Maluku Province.

During the visit, Admiral Johnston also visited the Indonesian Marine Corps Headquarters and paid his respects at Menteng Pulo War Cemetery, the resting place of 96 Australians.
