Australian Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia, Gita Kamath, visited Yogyakarta from 16 -19 October 2025, engaging in cultural, educational, and community-focused activities underscoring the strong and growing partnership between Australia and Indonesia.

Deputy Ambassador Kamath participated in a music collaboration concert where she performed as a violinist alongside members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) and participants of the Youth Music Camp on 16 October at the Auditorium Driyarkara, Universitas Sanata Dharma.

“This collaboration reflects the strength of Australia-Indonesia ties and our shared commitment to fostering creativity, dialogue, and friendship through the arts,” said Deputy Ambassador Kamath.

The MSO, Australia’s oldest orchestra and a leading arts institution, has been working with Yogyakarta’s musicians, artists, and cultural professionals in Yogyakarta since 2016. Their annual music camps, supported by the Victorian State Government and the Yogyakarta Special Region, are part of a long-term partnership with the Yogyakarta Cultural Office.

Deputy Ambassador Kamath also attended the 30th anniversary celebration of the Australian Consortium for 'In-Country' Indonesian Studies (ACICIS).

“ACICIS has a long history of facilitating cultural and language exchange between Australia and Indonesia, including through flagship Australian initiatives like the New Colombo Plan. Through these programs we build lasting bonds of friendship, knowledge, and opportunity between Australia and Indonesia,” she added.

In addition, Deputy Ambassador Kamath engaged with students at the Islamic University of Yogyakarta (UII), discussing Australia-Indonesia relations and highlighting the importance of connections between people in strengthening bilateral ties.

She also visited PR YAKKUM and met with civil society representatives in Yogyakarta to learn how local organisations advance tolerance, social cohesion, and inclusivity. PR YAKKUM is supported by INKLUSI (the Australia-Indonesia Partnership Towards an Inclusive Society).
