Australia and the World Health Organization (WHO) signed a new partnership agreement this month in Jakarta to partner with Indonesia to build a more inclusive, resilient and accessible primary health care system. The partnership forms part of the new Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Health Transformation (KITA SEHAT).
"Australia stands together Indonesia and WHO in advancing equitable access to quality health care," said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Rod Brazier. "This partnership continues through the KITA SEHAT initiative, reflecting our shared commitment to ensuring that all people can access the health services they need and deserve."
Under this partnership, WHO will work with Indonesian authorities and international partners to strengthen primary health care, improving access to quality services, including immunisation. The program will help build a stronger health workforce through targeted training and leadership development, especially for nurses and midwives, and advance Indonesia’s digital health transformation by improving data use and interoperability.
Recognising that health emergencies disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, the program will also enhance Indonesia's capacity to detect and respond to health threats through a One Health approach that integrates human, animal and environmental health.
Dr N. Paranietharan, WHO Representative to Indonesia, said, "By strengthening primary health care as the foundation of universal health coverage, we are building a system that is more resilient, more equitable and better prepared for future challenges. This collaboration demonstrates what is possible when we put people at the centre of everything we do."
Gender equality and disability and social inclusion considerations will be systematically integrated throughout, including through disaggregated data, engagement with women’s and disability organisations, and providing policy and technical support for the development of disability-inclusive health services.
