Australia and Indonesia held the inaugural Indonesia Australia Maritime Dialogue in Jakarta on Thursday 11 December 2025.

The Indonesia Australia Maritime Dialogue was agreed by President Prabowo and Prime Minister Albanese in May 2025 and builds on the recently announced Treaty for Common Security, agreed by the Prime Minister and President in November in Sydney.

“As close neighbours and natural maritime partners, Indonesia and Australia oversee vast maritime jurisdictions along one of the world’s longest maritime boundaries. Australia is committed to deepening cooperation with Indonesia to safeguard a peaceful, secure, and stable maritime environment” said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Rod Brazier.

Opened by the Indonesian Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Arif Havas Oegroseno, and co-chaired by Acep Somantri, Acting Senior Adviser to the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs on Political, Security and Legal Affairs, and Michelle Chan, Deputy Secretary Southeast and South Asia Group of Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, both sides agreed to work closely together to increase maritime domain awareness and information sharing and explore the establishment of bilateral legal talks and tabletop exercises in support of our shared conflict prevention agenda.

Appreciation was expressed during the dialogue from both sides for progressing cooperation in marine protection and the blue economy; maritime safety and security and agreed to new areas of cooperation to manage a range of shared maritime issues. Views were exchanged on regional maritime challenges and the importance of all states peacefully resolving disputes and adhering to international law, particularly UNCLOS.

The next Indonesia Australia Maritime Dialogue will be held in Australia in 2026.
