Australian Minister for Home Affairs, the Hon Tony Burke MP, visited Indonesia from 27 to 29 January to further strengthen cooperation under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and reinforce Australia and Indonesia’s shared commitment to a peaceful, stable and prosperous region.

Ministers agreed on the importance of advancing our partnerships on counter terrorism and violent extremism, cyber security, civil maritime security, people smuggling and irregular migration. Ministers announced the renewed Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Security Cooperation between the Australian Border Force and the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla), which further strengthens bilateral maritime security cooperation.  Read the Joint Communique here.

“As the world becomes more uncertain, Australia and Indonesia need to find our security together. We have built strong cooperation over many years and we will continue doing more together, for the benefit of both our own security and that of the region,” said Minister Burke.

Minister Burke also met several other ministerial counterparts, including Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration and Correctional Affairs, H.E. Yusril Ihza Mahendra; Minister of Home Affairs, H.E. Tito Karnavian; Minister of Creative Economy, HE Teuku Riefky Harsya and Minister for Communication and Digital, H.E. Meutya Hafid.

During the visit, Minister Burke travelled to Semarang to visit the Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation (JCLEC), a flagship Australia–Indonesia institution and regional hub for law-enforcement cooperation. JCLEC brings together regional partners from across Southeast Asia to build trusted partnerships, develop leadership capability and strengthen collective responses to terrorism and transnational crime.
