Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Rod Brazier, visited Palembang, South Sumatra Province, from 8-9 April 2026.
During the visit, Ambassador Brazier met with the Governor of South Sumatra, Herman Deru, to discuss shared priorities in sustainable infrastructure, human development and people-to-people links. Ambassador Brazier also met Mayor of Palembang, Dr Ratu Dewa, and Head of the Palembang Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Akbar Alfaro.
Ambassador Brazier visited the Palembang Wastewater Treatment Plant and met with residents benefiting from the Palembang City Sanitation Project – a long-standing infrastructure partnership between the Governments of Indonesia, South Sumatra, Palembang and Australia.
“I’m delighted to visit Palembang to see our practical cooperation in action,” said Ambassador Brazier, “In particular, the Palembang City Sanitation Project demonstrates how Australia’s strong partnership with Indonesia – at the national, provincial and city government levels – can improve public health and support local communities to grow.”
In Palembang, Ambassador Brazier also met with teachers and students at SMA Kusuma Bangsa, part of the Australia-Indonesia BRIDGE school partnership program. He engaged with academics and students at Sriwijaya University and hosted a reception for Australian alumni in Palembang to celebrate connections built through education and exchange programs.
Ambassador Brazier also toured the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Museum, viewing exhibitions on South Sumatra’s history and highlighting the role of cultural collaboration in strengthening Australia–Indonesia ties.
