Media Release

8 May 2026

Australian Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia, Gita Kamath, visited North Kalimantan from 5-7 May 2026.

During the visit, Deputy Ambassador Kamath met with Governor Zainal Paliwang to discuss Australia’s cooperation with North Kalimantan.

Deputy Ambassador Kamath visited SDN 015 Tanjung Selor, which is supported through the Australia-Indonesia Innovation for Indonesia’s School Children (INOVASI) program.

“I was pleased to see how inclusive education is being implemented here. Australia and Indonesia are working together to ensure teachers are better able to identify children's learning barriers through simple assessments,” said Deputy Ambassador Kamath.

While in Tanjung Selor, Deputy Ambassador Kamath also visited Samsat Bulangan (One-Stop Administration Service Office) and saw how Australia’s support through the Synergy and Collaboration to Accelerate Basic Services (SKALA) program is helping to increase local revenue and deliver inclusive services. In Tarakan, she joined Government officials to launch a new Disability Services Card that will open access to services and opportunities for people with disabilities.

Australia has supported teacher training at Universitas Borneo Tarakan for almost a decade through INOVASI. During this visit Deputy Ambassador Kamath visited UBT’s Faculty of Teacher Training and Education.

Deputy Ambassador Kamath laid a wreath at an Australian monument in Tarakan, where 225 Australians were killed and 669 were wounded during the Second World War.

"Australia shares a special history with North Kalimantan, and today I honour the memory of those who sacrificed their life here,” said Deputy Ambassador Kamath.

Deputy Ambassador Kamath also met with the Bank Indonesia Representative for North Kalimantan to discuss the current economic outlook and investment trends in the province.
