Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Rod Brazier, visited Medan, North Sumatra Province, from 12 to 14 May 2026, highlighting Australia’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with the province.
During the visit, Ambassador Brazier met with the Governor of North Sumatra, Bobby Nasution, and the Mayor of Medan, Rico Waas, to discuss how Australia-Indonesia economic and development cooperation can help drive economic growth in North Sumatra.
“I am delighted to visit Medan. We already have strong business and education connections between Australia and North Sumatra and I look forward to building closer ties,” said Ambassador Brazier.
Emphasising the importance of youth and innovation, Ambassador Brazier joined Najwa Shihab, founder of Narasi digital media company, at an Australian Embassy – Narasi Social Venture Program Competition (Kompetisi Gagasan Sosial Inovatif), where young Indonesians presented creative solutions to today’s social challenges.
The visit also celebrated cultural collaboration between Australia and Indonesia, with Ambassador Brazier hosting the launch of the Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia (FSAI) 2026 for Australian alumni in Medan. The event featured a screening of Bulan di Tepian Surga, a film produced by Australian alumna Yuh Rohana Meliala, as well as Beyond the Reef, which highlights Australia’s beautiful natural environment.
As part of his visit, Ambassador Brazier also visited Australian-owned feedlot, PT Juang Jaya Abdi Alam, to hear perspectives on the local business environment and opportunities to deepen trade and investment in North Sumatra.
Ambassador Brazier also met with Palang Merah Indonesia’s North Sumatra Branch and the Women Crisis Center Sinceritas, a partner of the INKLUSI program.
