Indonesia hosted the second Senior Officials Meeting under the Electric Vehicle (EV) collaboration mechanism Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Jakarta on 19 May 2026. The EV Mechanism is a leader-level commitment by Australia and Indonesia to advance cooperation and collaboration on the EV battery ecosystem.
"Through the EV Mechanism, Australia and Indonesia are working more closely on the energy transition, creating new opportunities for stronger clean energy supply chains," said Australian Embassy Minister Counsellor - Economic, Investment and Infrastructure, Jonathan Gilbert.
The meeting was co-chaired by Elen Setiadi, Deputy Minister (IV) from the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs and Alison Drury, A/g Division Head from the International Strategy and National Security Division in the Australian Department of Industry, Science and Resources.
The meeting was attended by Tri Winarno, Director General for Coal and Minerals from the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Septian Hario Seto, Executive Secretary of the Indonesian National Economic Council, and officials from the Indonesian Ministry of Industry and the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Officials reviewed progress made under the EV Mechanism, including a recent study under the KONEKSI program that will support decarbonising Indonesia’s bus infrastructure, and a new study to help Indonesia address the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of red mud (bauxite residue).
Since the EV Mechanism has come into effect, linkages between Indonesia and Australia’s EV ecosystems have strengthened, with Indonesia now the second largest market for Australian lithium (spodumene) in 2025, up from almost nothing in 2023.
