Indonesian Language Learning Ambassadors (ILLA) Prepare for Placements Across Australia

Media Release

17 June 2026

The Australian Embassy in Indonesia, together with the Indonesian Embassy in Australia, welcomed the second cohort of 2026 for the Indonesian Language Learning Ambassadors (ILLA) program on 16 June.

Under the program, 80 Indonesian language ambassadors will be placed in 51 schools and three universities across Australia. ILLA ambassadors will share their expertise in Indonesian language, culture, and customs while forming lasting friendships in Australia.

The ILLA program continues to strengthen educational and cultural links between the two countries. During the Australia-Indonesia Annual Leaders’ Meeting in Jakarta in 2025, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed their joint commitment to the program and welcomed the expansion of ambassador placements across Australia.

"Connections between people are at the heart of our partnership with Indonesia. Through the ILLA program, Indonesian scholars and Australian students are learning from one another, deepening understanding between our countries and building connections that will endure for years to come," said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Rod Brazier.

The increase to 80 ambassador reflects the strong engagement from both Indonesian scholars and Australian education providers. Through classroom activities and community interaction, the program is strengthening cultural and educational links between Indonesia and Australia.

Prior to placements, ILLA ambassadors undertake orientation and tailored Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing (BIPA) training delivered by the Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education of Indonesia, equipping them to engage effectively in diverse Australian learning environments.
