Australia-Indonesia Research Explores Marine Innovations to Support Food Security and the Blue Economy

Media Release

4 November 2026

Australia and Indonesia are strengthening research cooperation to support food security and innovation in the blue economy.

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Rod Brazier today visited the Marine Aquaculture Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in North Lombok to see first hand, two Australia-Indonesia research projects supported through the BRIN-KONEKSI Joint Funding Scheme on Marine Bioeconomy.

The joint projects are developing innovative ways to create economic value from marine resources while supporting sustainable aquaculture and coastal livelihood.

“Australia and Indonesia are investing in research that delivers practical benefits for communities. Through our partnership with BRIN, we are supporting innovation that helps ensure our marine resources are more sustainable, strengthens coastal livelihoods and creates new opportunities for economic cooperation,” said Ambassador Brazier.

The first project, led by BRIN researcher Syahputra Wibowo in collaboration with Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Brawijaya, and Curtin University, is exploring ways to convert shrimp shell waste into astaxanthin, a high-value antioxidant used in health supplements, creating new economic opportunities while reducing waste.

The second project, led by BRIN researcher Sunarti Sinaga with Universitas Brawijaya, KKP and Griffith University, is developing sustainable lobster feed from black soldier fly larvae and locally available mussels, while using artificial intelligence to support lobster farming.

Together, these projects demonstrate how Australia–Indonesia research collaboration can support innovation, sustainable economic growth and improved livelihoods in coastal areas.
