Australian Film Festival Celebrates Creativity and Diversity

Media Release

25 January 2018

The Indonesian premiere of award-winning Australian comedy-drama Ali’s Wedding marked tonight’s opening of Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia (FSAI) 2018, a celebration of creativity and diversity in the Australian and Indonesian film industries.

This year’s Festival is being held simultaneously in Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar and Denpasar from 25-28 January.

Film buffs have the opportunity to meet Australian director Rhiannon Bannenberg and producer Steve Jaggi at a screening of their teen movie Rip Tide, which features Disney star Debby Ryan. Sci-fi producer Aidan O’Bryan will also speak at a showing of his film, OtherLife.

The FSAI line-up includes movies by Australian alumni from Indonesia, including the critically-acclaimed Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts by director Mouly Surya, and two films based on books by Australian alumni: Melbourne Rewind and Melawan Takdir.

Films by the six finalists in the FSAI Short Film Competition will also be screened, with the winner awarded a trip to the Melbourne International Film Festival.

“Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia offers movie lovers a closer look at new Australian films and showcases the creative talent of our distinguished alumni from Indonesia,” said Australian Chargé d’Affaires to Indonesia, Allaster Cox.

“We are also proud to support emerging Indonesian film makers through our short film competition, which will screen in all four Festival cities. I congratulate all the finalists.”
