Australian Ambassador visits Padang, West Sumatra

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams PSM visited Padang in West Sumatra on 13 June 2024.

While in Padang, Ambassador Williams met the Governor of West Sumatra Mahyeldi Ansharullah and the Acting Mayor of Padang, Andree Harmadi Algamar.

“I am pleased to be celebrating the 75th anniversary of Australia-Indonesia diplomatic relations this year in Padang, West Sumatra – known for its strong and rich Minangkabau culture, from cuisine to traditional customs still carried out by the community today,” said Ambassador Williams.

Ambassador Williams launched a new #AussieBanget Corner at Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) with UNP Rector, Dr. Ir. Krismadinata, S.T., M.T.. The #AussieBanget Corner is a permanent space for students to explore Australian books, resources and information about Australia, including Australia Awards scholarships.

A highlight of the program was meeting Australian alumni in Padang, who shared their experiences of living and studying in Australia.

Ambassador Williams also opened the Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia alongside Steve Jaggi, Australian CEO and film producer of Jaggi Entertainment. The film festival is screening for the first time in Padang and began with a screening of “Love is in the Air”.
