Media Release

2 July 2024

Australia and Indonesia further strengthened energy transition cooperation through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Jakarta on Tuesday 2 July.

David Fredericks, Secretary of the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment & Water (DCCEEW) and Dr Dadan Kusdiana, Secretary General of the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) signed the MoU.

DCCEEW Secretary Fredericks said this MOU deepens the partnership between Australia and Indonesia, building on both countries’ comparative advantages, to support the energy transition and promote investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy manufacturing.

“In collaboration, we will work together to share knowledge and best practice approaches to tackle key issues in the energy transition and to achieve net zero,” Secretary Fredericks said.

The Australian Embassy will work with ESDM to identify opportunities for collaboration with a focus on renewable energy grid integration, energy efficiency and clean energy supply chains.

Dr. Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation at the ESDM stated, "Indonesia is keen to enhance its cooperation with Australia in the energy sector. We also aim to drive private investment to accelerate our journey towards achieving net zero emissions.”

This partnership will strengthen the annual Australia-Indonesia Energy Dialogue. It builds on Australia’s growing engagement on climate change and energy transition in Indonesia, including the recent visit to Indonesia by the Australian Ambassador for Climate Change, Kristen Tilley.

It also complements the recent launch of KINETIK – the Australia-Indonesia Climate and Infrastructure Partnership, the Australia-Indonesia MoU on EV cooperation and the MoU between Indonesian Perusahaan Listrik Negara and Export Finance Australia to develop a USD200 million capital financing facility to support Indonesia’s energy transition.
