The Australian Bureau of Meteorology and the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) are collaborating to improve renewable energy planning using weather data through the Indonesia-Australia Climate and Infrastructure Partnership (KINETIK).
Visiting Jakarta this week, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology’s David McQueen said, “Weather is the fuel of the future energy system. And the Australian Bureau of Meteorology is excited to partner-up with Indonesian organisations to support the development and use of weather and climate information for energy system planning.”
Weather forecasts enable electricity grid operators to better predict renewable energy generation and provide back-up to ensure there are no power outages on cloudy or low-wind days.
BMKG’s Deputy Head for Climatology, Dr. Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, said BMKG is focused on delivering climate services to support the energy of the future.
“BMKG welcomes this new arena of collaboration on the development of climate services for renewable energy generation. It is one of our top priorities,” he said.
The visit builds on Australia’s growing engagement on climate change and energy transition in Indonesia, including the recent Australia-Indonesia MoU on Deepening Energy Transition Cooperation, the Australia-Indonesia MoU on EV cooperation and the MoU between Indonesian Perusahaan Listrik Negara and Export Finance Australia to develop a USD200 million capital financing facility to support Indonesia’s energy transition.
